‘Pension bill not withdrawn’

The opposition today charged that the Private Pension Scheme Bill has not been withdrawn from the parliamentary order paper despite the cabinet decision to do so.

The bill has been listed on the order paper as the item number 14 to be taken up for debate.

JVP MP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was the first to raise it and asked as to why it had not been removed from the order paper.
Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga also raised the same matter subsequently and asked whether the government took a Cabinet decision to withdraw it.

Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva said that it could be removed from the Order Paper only after taking up it at a party leaders’ meeting.

“We have to do it through the right procedure. That is the parliamentary tradition in this regard. We regret the opposition not knowing this tradition,” he said.
