Fonseka to face military trial

The Sri Lankan armed forces have announced that the former presidential candidate and former military chief, General Sarath Fonseka, will be put on military trial next week.
He’s to face seven charges under two broad areas and the military says the trial process is likely to be over before next month’s general election in which Fonseka intends to stand.

Mervin Silva prepared to resign?

President Rajapaksa participates International Women’s Day Celebration in Sri Lanka

The National celebration of the International Women’s Day was held at Siribopura Singapore Community Hall in Hambantota under the patronage of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa on 8th March.
The International Women’s Day falls on today. Women’s contribution to the decade of prosperity in Sri Lanka is the title of this year’s celebration and the first women’s Day which is being celebrated after the eradication of terrorism. President Rajapaksa participated the event and said that the eradication of terrorism was the most valuable gift given to the women in Sri Lanka. He further said that the government has created a healthy condition for women to live with a sense of pride and promised to eradicate drug menace and the poverty which badly affect and depress women in Sri Lanka.

Indian Foreign Secretary on President’s electoral victory: Confidence and hope for Indo-Lanka ties

Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao who met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Janadhipathi Mandiraya yesterday congratulated the President for his resounding victory at the recent Presidential Election. She observed that so much had taken place for the better in Sri Lanka since she was last here as High Commissioner.
She said the President’s victory gave much cause for confidence and hope for bi-lateral relations between India and Sri Lanka in the future.

Investigations on Prageeth’s disappearance not given over to the CCD: a desirable outcome soon

Police media spokesman Priyashantha Jayakody said, following investigations conducted into the disappearance of Journalist Ekneliyagoda by two police teams from Homagama Police led by two Police Inspectors is progressing successfully, and a desirable result can be expected shortly.
Following the leads provided by the several telephone calls, special attention has been focused on them: telephone numbers have been scheduled and inquiries had been held. A successful breakthrough is in the offing, Jayakody added.

Recently, Milinda Moragoda, Minister of Justice and Law Reform, and the leader of the Sri Lanka National Congress (SLNC), a constituent party of the United People’s Freedom Alliance launched a website to to ‘Promote Access to Voting for Sri Lankan’s Abroad.’
While launching www.slnc.org website Minister Milinda Moragoda said the Vote” is a universal human right. In a democracy there is nothing more fundamental than having the right to vote.

Beware of using ATM Machines in Sri Lanka

On the night of March 4 (Thursday) 2010 around 9.45 p.m I used the HNB ATM machine situated next to the Bible Society in Colombo-03. I inserted my Nations Trust Bank ATM card (cirrus) into the machine to withdraw Rs.10,000/=. The words “Transaction in progress” appeared on the screen. A few seconds later the card was ejected with the message on the screen “insert card”. I tried twice and had the same results.
I then informed the security officer on duty and called the HNB hotline. The customer care assistant informed me that nothing could be done until the next morning and to report this matter to the person in charge of ATM at the same branch.

Malani Fonseka among Asia’s 25 greatest actors of all time

Sri Lanka’s veteran actress and the Queen of Sinhala Cinema Malini Fonseka has been named by CNN as among Asia’s best 25 actors of all time.
Malani Fonseka was nominated on Monday for the best actress award at the Asia Pacific Film Awards ceremony conducted for the third time by the Asia Pacific Cinema Academy, for her role as Sandhya Rani in the Sinhala film Akasa Kusum.

Opposition Leader should withdraw statements on UPFA candidates – Media Minister

Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeyawardana says that the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has still not realized his role in the politics and always makes statements which don’t fit for an experienced politician like him.
At a press briefing in Colombo yesterday, the Media Minister said that a statement, he (Mr. Wickremasighe) made about national cricket player and United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate for Matara district Sanath Jayasuriya should be withdrawn by the Opposition Leader.
