Charge sheets against UNP MP’s son
The Kollupitiya police today filed charge sheets in Court against Dinuk Loku Bandara Kiriella, the son of UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella on charges of driving a vehicle under the influence of liquor, obstructing a police officer from carrying out his duty and assaulting him.
When the charge sheets were read out by the interpreter mudliyar, the suspect announced that he was pleading not guilty for three counts.
On June 3 this year, the Kollupitiya police had arrested the son of UNP Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella after he allegedly assaulted a police officer under the influence of liquor at the Kollupitiya Junction. Making a complaint at the Kollupitiya police, a Police constable had complained that a car had crashed against a road construction site at the Kollupitiya Junction and thereby the traffic police officers in the vicinity had examined the accident.
The police further alleged that the suspect had also arrived in a jeep to the site. The complainant further stated that a police constable who was on duty at the time had been assaulted by the assailant and threatened him stating that he was the son of a leading UNP Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella and started assaulting the police officer.
Senior counsel Kalinga Indatissa appeared for the suspect and sergeant Ussapitiya of Kollupitiya police was the prosecutor. Colombo Fort Magistrate Ms. Lanka Jayaratne fixed the trial for October 13.
