President Visits Upper Kotmale Hydro power Project

President Mahinda Rajapaksa inspected the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power project site on early hours of 24th (friday) July, while he was in the Uva province attending Provincial Council election campaign in the area.
He made an inspection visit to the site and instructed the officials to take steps to complete the project on schedule. He further requested the officials to expedite the construction work to complete the work prior to schedule to meet the set targets.
The Upper Kotmale Hydropower project was launched in 2006 and is estimated to cost USD 950 million. Construction is due to be completed by 2011. It is funded by the Japanese Government on an Overseas Development Assistance loan agreed between the two governments on March 2002. The actual loan is offered to Sri Lanka by Bank for International Cooperation in Japan.
This Hydro Power Project being implemented by the Ceylon Electricity Board and it is a run of river hydro power project with an installed capacity of 150MW. Once the project is completed it will produce 409GWh per year.
