Polonnaruwa Railway Station reopens after Rs. 35 Million upgrade

Polonnaruwa Railway Station, renovated at a cost of Rs. 35 million under the national “Dream Destination” programme, was reopened for public use today (September 3).

The renovation was carried out under a public-private partnership, with the Araliya Group of Companies providing the Rs. 35 million financial contribution.

The “Dream Destination” programme aims to improve facilities and modernize 100 railway stations belonging to Sri Lanka Railways.

The programme is being implemented with the guidance of the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat and the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, together with Sri Lanka Railways and the support of private-sector services and financial contributions.

Under the Polonnaruwa Railway Station project, the old station building was renovated and several passenger facilities were improved.

These include waiting and rest areas, the railway goods store, as well as separate facilities for members of the clergy, men and women.

The renovated railway station was reopened by Araliya Group of Companies Chairman Dudley Sirisena, with the participation of Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake and several government officials.
