Sri Lanka begins Rs. 3 Billion El Niño crop compensation payments today

The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board will begin paying compensation today (September 4) to farmers who suffered crop damage due to El Niño conditions.

Board Chairman Premasiri Jasinghe Arachchi said Rs. 3 billion has been allocated for the compensation programme.

Accordingly, compensation for affected farmers in the Polonnaruwa District is scheduled to be credited to their bank accounts today.

Compensation payments for affected farmers in all other districts are expected to be completed by September 15, 2026, he added.
