The Department of Motor Traffic says green-background number plates are being issued for all electric vehicles in Sri Lanka.

Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Thushara Indunil Fernando, said the green number plates issued for electric vehicles are legally valid.

He said vehicles other than electric vehicles continue to receive number plates with white and yellow backgrounds.

Meanwhile, the Department of Motor Traffic has completed the preparation of new number plates for 88,740 registered vehicles.

According to the Commissioner General, this includes number plates for 56,233 vehicles registered between June 10 and August 31, 2026.

Number plates have also been prepared for 32,507 vehicles registered during 2023 and 2024.

Thushara Fernando has requested owners of the relevant vehicles to visit the Department of Motor Traffic office in Narahenpita to collect their number plates.
