Private sector employees in Sri Lanka will be able to obtain their monthly railway season tickets online from October 1, 2026.

The facility will be available through the Sri Lanka Railways website, seatreservation.railway.gov.lk.

Until now, the online season ticket service had been available to public sector officers. The official programme to extend the facility to private sector employees was held today (September 8) at the Nelum Hall of the Waters Edge Hotel in Battaramulla.

The event was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena, with Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Engineer Eranga Weeraratne also participating.

Previously, passengers applying for monthly railway season tickets had to submit applications, photographs, documents confirming their residence, copies of their National Identity Card and other required documents to obtain a season ticket identity card.

They also had to visit railway stations on specified dates and times to complete the necessary procedures.

Under the new system, introduced to make the process easier, passengers will be able to obtain their monthly railway season tickets online after their identity is verified and their user account is authenticated.

User account verification can be completed at any railway station where seat reservation facilities are available.

Meanwhile, the online issuance of concessionary railway season tickets provided to public sector officers under Chapter XVII of the Establishments Code has been in operation since June 9, 2026.

The programme is being jointly implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the Ministry of Digital Economy, Sri Lanka Railways and SLT-MOBITEL.

The initiative is aimed at making railway services more efficient, convenient and accessible through digital technology.
