Five killed in separate road accidents across Sri Lanka

Five people were killed in five separate road accidents reported in Horana, Polgahawela, Ingiriya, Ratnapura and Mawathagama on September 6, 2026, according to Sri Lanka Police.
In Horana, a motorcycle travelling towards Kalupahana veered off the Wagawatta–Kalupahana by-road and overturned in the Kalupahana area during the early hours of the day.
The rider was trapped under the motorcycle and died at the scene. The deceased was a 44-year-old resident of Poruwadanda.
In Polgahawela, a motorcycle travelling towards Kurunegala struck a pedestrian who was crossing the Colombo–Kurunegala road in the Hodelle area on Sunday morning.
The seriously injured pedestrian was admitted to Kurunegala Hospital but later died while receiving treatment. He was a 44-year-old resident of Polgahawela.
In Ingiriya, a motorcycle travelling towards Sawgashandiya collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction on the Ingiriya–Padukka road in the Bope area during the evening.
The 35-year-old motorcyclist, a resident of Bope, Padukka, sustained serious injuries and was dead on admission to Padukka Hospital.
Meanwhile, in Ratnapura, a motorcycle travelling from Ratnapura towards Kahangama crashed into the rear of a lorry parked facing the same direction on the Ratnapura–Panadura road in the Kahangama area during the night.
The motorcyclist was admitted to Ratnapura Hospital with serious injuries and later died while receiving treatment. The deceased was a 47-year-old resident of Ratnapura.
In another accident in Mawathagama, a lorry travelling towards Rambukkana went out of the driver’s control and collided with a three-wheeler travelling in the opposite direction on the Mawathagama–Rambukkana road in the Iluruwatta area on Sunday night.
Following the collision, the lorry travelled towards the right side of the road, veered off the road and overturned.
The drivers of both the three-wheeler and the lorry sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Kurunegala Hospital. The three-wheeler driver, a 57-year-old resident of Hemmathagama, died from his injuries.
The lorry driver has been arrested.
Horana, Polgahawela, Ingiriya, Ratnapura and Mawathagama Police are conducting further investigations into the respective accidents.
