Over 290 kg of cannabis, 870 litres of illicit liquor seized in Police raids

Sri Lanka Police seized more than 290 kilograms of cannabis and 870 litres of illicit liquor during separate raids carried out in Mahabage, Hambegamuwa and Bandaragama on August 24, 2026.
On Monday afternoon, officers of the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Unit conducted a raid in the Thotupala Road area of the Mahabage Police Division based on information received.
Police arrested a 48-year-old resident of Welisara, Ragama, with 150 litres of illicit liquor packed in 200 bottles.
Mahabage Police are conducting further investigations.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, Hambegamuwa Police conducted a raid in a forest area in Kudaliara based on information revealed by a suspect who is being questioned under a detention order.
During the raid, officers found 290 kilograms and 50 grams of cannabis. No suspect was present at the location when police carried out the operation.
Hambegamuwa Police are conducting further investigations to identify and arrest those involved.
In another raid on Monday evening, Bandaragama Police arrested two suspects in the Kindelpitiya area while they were allegedly transporting 270 litres of illicit liquor, packed in 360 bottles, in a car.
Police also seized the car and Rs. 20,500 in cash suspected to have been earned from the sale of illicit liquor.
The suspects, aged 20 and 45, are residents of the Panadura area. Bandaragama Police are conducting further investigations.
Later that night, Mahabage Police conducted another raid near the George Mawatha Junction and arrested a 33-year-old resident of Ragama who was allegedly transporting 450 litres of illicit liquor, packed in 600 bottles, in a car.
