Namal accuses government of political revenge against opposition

SLPP National Organizer and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has accused the government of attempting to take political revenge against him and other opposition figures.

Rajapaksa made the remarks while attending a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party meeting held in Diyabeduma, Polonnaruwa today (August 16).

Referring to the recent arrest of the SLPP General Secretary, Rajapaksa said there had been a strong effort to have him remanded over allegations that he had intimidated the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

However, he noted that the court eventually granted bail.

Rajapaksa questioned whether the IGP had actually been intimidated, saying the matter should be directly clarified by the IGP because the allegation had originated from the police.

He also criticised the authorities for focusing on attempts to remand opposition party members instead of examining the reasons behind their statements and grievances.

Rajapaksa questioned why authorities had not investigated why certain statements were made in the first place or why the President had been affected by them.
