PM Harini stresses preserving Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage at Bellanwila Esala Perahera

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says religious and cultural festivals such as the Bellanwila Esala Perahera play an important role in preserving Sri Lanka’s heritage for future generations.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while attending the 76th annual Bellanwila Esala Perahera at the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya yesterday (August 15).

She said the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya holds an important place not only in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage but also in preserving the country’s cultural and artistic traditions.

Dr. Amarasuriya noted that an Esala Perahera is not simply a colourful cultural procession, but a living heritage that brings together religious beliefs, traditional dance, music, craftsmanship and a sense of community.

She said preserving such traditions is not only about protecting the past, but also about giving future generations an opportunity to understand their cultural identity and carry it forward.

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of developing respect for traditions and cultural heritage among children and young people.

She said values taught by Buddhism, including compassion, loving-kindness, non-violence and coexistence, should be incorporated into daily life.

Dr. Amarasuriya added that the Government has a responsibility to provide the necessary support to ensure that the knowledge, skills and traditions of traditional artists are passed on to future generations.

She expressed her appreciation to the Chief Incumbent Thero and the Maha Sangha, the Dayaka Sabha, the organizing committee, traditional dancers, drummers and other artists who contributed to the successful organization of the Bellanwila Esala Perahera.

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, who also attended the event, said everyone has a responsibility to strengthen and continue the Perahera while promoting Sri Lanka’s Buddhist philosophy and culture.

He said the Government is prepared to provide the fullest possible support for these efforts.

Minister Herath added that the Perahera makes an important contribution towards promoting religious and national unity and helping people move forward together as one community.

The Chief Incumbent Thero and members of the Maha Sangha of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya, Minister Vijitha Herath, other public representatives, government officials and devotees were also present at the occasion.
