Sri Lanka pledges US$ 1 Million in aid to flood-hit Nepal

Sri Lanka will provide US$ 1 million to Nepal to support humanitarian and relief efforts following the devastating floods and landslides that caused loss of life, displacement and widespread destruction.

President Anura Kumara Disanayaka has directed the Government to make the financial contribution as a demonstration of Sri Lanka’s solidarity with the people of Nepal.

The President expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and suffering caused by the disaster and conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the Government and people of Sri Lanka to the Government and people of Nepal.

He also extended condolences in particular to the families who lost their loved ones.

Recalling the close and longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Nepal, President Disanayaka said Sri Lanka stands firmly with the people of Nepal during this difficult time.

The US$ 1 million contribution is intended to support immediate relief and humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the floods and landslides.

Earlier on August 27, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath spoke with Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal and conveyed Sri Lanka’s condolences, support and solidarity with Nepal.

The Sri Lankan Government said it will continue to remain closely engaged with the Government of Nepal and explore further appropriate ways to contribute to Nepal’s relief and recovery efforts.
