Rumesh Tharanga wins Zurich Diamond League with massive 92.07m throw

Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the men’s javelin event at the 2026 Zurich Diamond League on August 27, 2026, with a massive throw of 92.07 metres.
The 23-year-old produced the winning distance on his sixth and final attempt at the meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday (August 27). It was his second throw beyond 92 metres this season.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished second with a season-best throw of 86.93 metres, while Poland’s Dawid Wegner took third place with a season-best 85.16 metres.
The victory was Rumesh’s fourth consecutive Diamond League meeting win, following his successes in Rome, Doha and Lausanne. His winning distances were 92.62 metres in Rome, 88.68 metres in Doha, 88.14 metres in Lausanne and 92.07 metres in Zurich.
He began his 2026 Diamond League season by finishing second in Rabat with a throw of 85.97 metres before starting his four-meeting winning streak.
His 92.62-metre throw at the Rome Diamond League on June 4 remains the best men’s javelin performance in the world this year. It is also his personal best and the Sri Lankan national record.
That performance also broke the Rome Diamond League meeting record of 90.34 metres set by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen in 2006 and made Rumesh the first Sri Lankan javelin thrower to pass the 90-metre mark.
The 92.62-metre effort placed him eighth on the men’s javelin world all-time list and made him the second-best Asian thrower in history, behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who holds the Asian record of 92.97 metres from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Rumesh also won the men’s javelin gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a throw of 89.75 metres, continuing his outstanding season.
His performances have also taken him to the top of the World Athletics men’s javelin rankings. World Athletics currently lists Rumesh at No. 1 with 1,363 points, ahead of Germany’s Julian Weber with 1,342 points.
Rumesh has also finished at the top of the 2026 Diamond League qualification standings with 39 points from five meetings. He has qualified for the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 4 and 5.
His latest victory in Zurich adds another major achievement to a season in which he has established himself among the world’s leading javelin throwers.
