Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has become the country’s first-ever Diamond League champion after winning the men’s javelin throw title in Brussels, Belgium, on September 5, 2026.

Tharanga secured victory at the Diamond League Final with a throw of 89.04 metres, produced on his third attempt.

The performance marked a historic achievement for Sri Lankan athletics, with Tharanga becoming the first Sri Lankan athlete to be crowned a Diamond League champion.

His winning throw of 89.04 metres also strengthened his place on the global athletics stage as he claimed one of the sport’s major international titles.
