The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources Management has formulated a programme to sell the produce of the Mahaweli zones in Colombo at concessionary rates.
Subject Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva speaking to Newsfirst said that the step had been taken to prevent the price of consumer goods from increasing due to the extreme weather conditions experienced in the island.
As a preliminary measure this programme will be implemented tomorrow and the day after and then again on the 24th and 25th of this month.
The ministry also noted that rice, vegetables, grains, eggs and curd would be sold at prices which were 30 to 40 per cent below market prices.

Prices of essential commodities should be reduced and made available throughout the year. It is totally ridiculous that such commodities are sold at great discounts just for a few days only, perhaps to lull the people’s minds into voting infavour of the current government during the local elections. People are not going to be duped by such softsoap. If the current government cares for the people it should stop the food mafia from raking in huge profits by buyinbg cheap from farmers and selling at high cost to the public. Why cannot the government put an immediate stop to this crime legally, arrest and seize assets of this food mafia, to teach them a lesson? The nation will then surely vote for the current government if it acts to protect the nation from the food mafia through the year for all times.
