Notorious drug trafficker Shiran Basik brought back to Sri Lanka from UAE

Shiran Basik, a suspected major drug trafficker wanted over several criminal investigations in Sri Lanka, has been brought back from the United Arab Emirates and handed over to the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB).

Basik, 48, a resident of Kalubowila in Dehiwala, was brought from Abu Dhabi to Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake on August 14, 2026.

Two other individuals suspected of being members of organised criminal gangs were also brought to Sri Lanka and handed over to the CCIB for further investigations.

Basik had reportedly fled Sri Lanka and travelled to the United Arab Emirates in 2018. An Interpol Red Notice had also been issued against him.

According to police information, Basik is wanted in connection with several drug trafficking and other criminal investigations.

Drug trafficking investigations involving him are being handled by the Police Narcotics Bureau, Dehiwala Police and Mirihana Police.

He is also linked to investigations into the possession of firearms conducted by Mount Lavinia Police and Dehiwala Police, while Piliyandala Police are investigating allegations involving the possession of dangerous and sharp weapons.

The Colombo Crime Division is investigating allegations that he was a member of an unlawful assembly and was involved in causing damage.

Police said Basik was arrested by Dubai Police on May 26, 2026, allegedly over photographs and video footage found on his mobile phone showing drones and missiles said to have been used by Iran in attacks on the United Arab Emirates during the Iran-U.S. conflict.

Sri Lankan authorities are also expected to investigate assets suspected to have been acquired through drug trafficking and other organised criminal activities.

Further investigations into Basik and the other suspects will be carried out under the orders and instructions of the Inspector General of Police.
