Unrest breaks out at Pallansena Open Prison Camp

UPDATE – 01:00 PM: The protest by inmates at the Pallansena Open Prison Camp in Dalupotha, Negombo, is continuing, with Police using tear gas in an attempt to bring the situation under control.

Police, the Police Special Task Force (STF), Riot Control Unit and Sri Lanka Air Force have been called in to control the unrest.

The inmates reportedly began the protest over a lack of space and sanitary facilities at the prison, while also demanding that their court cases be concluded quickly.

UPDATE – 11:15 AM:

Unrest has broken out at the Pallansena Open Prison Camp in Dalupotha, Negombo.

A group of inmates is also reported to have climbed onto the roof of the prison.

Following the unrest at Negombo Prison last month, a group of inmates who had been held there was transferred to the Pallansena Open Prison Camp.
