Sri Lanka’s 22nd Amendment Bill gazetted with new retirement ages for judges

The Bill for the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which proposes changes to the retirement ages of Sri Lanka’s senior judges, has been gazetted on the instructions of the Minister of Justice and National Integration.
According to the Bill, the retirement age of Supreme Court judges will be amended to 67 years, while the retirement age of Court of Appeal judges will be amended to 65 years.
However, a separate limit will apply to the Chief Justice.
Under the proposed amendment, the Chief Justice will be required to retire on whichever comes first: reaching the age of 67 or completing six years from the date of appointment as Chief Justice.
