Former Bandarawela Mayor arrested over alleged financial fraud

Former Mayor of the Bandarawela Municipal Council Janaka Nishantha Rathnayake has been arrested over an alleged financial fraud and the preparation of forged documents at the Municipal Council.

He was arrested by the Bandarawela Special Crimes Investigation Unit last night (September 9) as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged offences.

The arrest followed investigations involving two revenue inspectors and clerical staff of the Municipal Council who were arrested several months ago and are currently in remand custody in connection with the same case.

Officers of the Bandarawela Special Crimes Investigation Unit are currently questioning the former Mayor.

Rathnayake is due to be produced before the Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court today (September 10).
