Residents protest while carrying coffin of accident victim

Police on Thursday worked to control a group of residents who engaged in a protest opposite the Thambuththegama Police with the body of a woman who was killed in an accident.

Residents of the Thambuthegama area engaged in the protest at around 9.30 am on Thursday, objecting against the decision to grant bail to the driver of the vehicle that was responsible for the accident.

The protesters, who assembled at the Rajina Junction, then began a march carrying the coffin of the victim to the Thabuthegama Police Station.

Traffic has been disrupted along the Anuradhapura-Thambuthegama road owing to this protest.

The protesters who had gathered opposite the Thambuthegama police station had made their way into the premises by forcing open the gate.

They had also attacked the police with stones, after which the police retaliated by firing what appeared to be tear gas.

A tense situation continues to prevail in the area.
