Sagara Kariyawasam released on bail

Kaduwela Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa has ordered the release on bail of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam, who was arrested over alleged death threats against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other remarks concerning the government and the President.

Kariyawasam was ordered to be released on two personal bails of Rs. 2 million each, while the court also imposed a foreign travel ban on him.

Submissions by both sides concluded at around 4:30 PM today (August 10), after which the Magistrate postponed the announcement of the bail order.

Nearly three hours later, after considering the submissions, the Magistrate delivered a 17-page bail order.

The court ordered Kariyawasam’s release after the bail conditions were fulfilled.

The Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) had launched an investigation into a statement made by Kariyawasam on August 3, 2026 concerning Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya.

Details of the investigation had been reported to the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court, while Kariyawasam had been instructed to appear before the CCIB this morning to provide a statement.

Accordingly, he arrived at the Bureau this morning and was arrested after his statement was recorded.

The allegations against him include making death threats against the IGP and making statements that could bring the government and the President into disrepute among the public.

Kariyawasam was subsequently produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court this afternoon.

A group including opposition Members of Parliament and representatives of political parties was also present at the court premises at the time.
