‘Rathmalane Saima’ and two others brought back to Sri Lanka from Malaysia
Three suspects arrested in Malaysia, including alleged organized crime figure Dhanushka Kaushalya alias “Rathmalane Saima,” were brought back to Sri Lanka this afternoon (August 10).
The suspects arrived at around 4:28 PM on SriLankan Airlines flight UL315.
A special Sri Lanka Police team, including Assistant Superintendent of Police Rohan Olugala and officers from the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Unit, had travelled to Malaysia to bring the suspects back following their arrests.
Police said the main suspect, Dhanushka Kaushalya alias “Rathmalane Saima,” is a 41-year-old resident of Rathmalana who had also temporarily lived in Peradeniya and Tissamaharama.
He was arrested in Malaysia with the assistance of Malaysian Police and INTERPOL during a special joint operation. Police said Red Notices had been issued against him.
The suspect is an accused in two cases being heard before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court.
He is accused of abducting a person in the Peradeniya Police Division in 2014, assaulting the victim and causing serious injuries.
He is also accused of shooting and killing a person in the same police division in 2016.
Open warrants had been issued against him after he failed to appear before court in connection with the two cases.
Police said the suspect had also been arrested in 2003 over a robbery in the Mount Lavinia Police Division and was later prosecuted before the Colombo High Court.
He was again arrested by Mount Lavinia Police in 2007 for allegedly possessing a hand grenade.
At the time of his arrest in Malaysia, two other men who were with him were also taken into custody. They are a 35-year-old resident of Rathmalana and a 31-year-old resident of Mount Lavinia.
Sri Lanka Police said one of the three suspects has been identified as a key associate of alleged organized crime figure “Kanjipani Imran,” while an INTERPOL Red Notice has also reportedly been issued against him.
The two other suspects were also brought to Sri Lanka for further investigations.
Police said further investigations will be carried out on the instructions and under the direct supervision of the Inspector General of Police.
