Sri Lanka Prisons Department considers rehiring retired officers amid staff shortage

Sri Lanka’s Department of Prisons is considering re-employing retired prison officers to address the existing shortage of staff, Commissioner General of Prisons (Covering Up Duties) Prasad Hemantha Kumara said.
He said discussions are currently underway on the proposal, with attention being given to bringing retired officers back into service as a possible solution to the shortage.
Meanwhile, the Department of Prisons said inmates are expected to be transferred to the old Bogambara Prison next week.
According to the Commissioner General, around 90% of the renovation work at the prison has already been completed.
He added that prison officers are currently being assigned to the facility ahead of the transfer of inmates.
