Sri Lanka to invite private investment in higher education sector
Sri Lanka would open up the higher education sector for private investment, an official said here on Wednesday.
Sri Lankan Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella told Xinhua news agency that five foreign universities, including Manipal University of India, have agreed to put up their branch campuses in the country.
The minister, however, said there was a case regarding the acceptability of the only private medical college operating in Sri Lanka.
The future private investments in higher education would depend upon the Supreme Court ruling expected soon, Kiriella added.
He said a large number of students went abroad on an annual basis for higher education as the country’s university system could not offer them adequate opportunities.
“Nearly 100,000 students qualify for university education every year. However, only one fourth of them can be accommodated because opportunities are limited at the state universities,” the minister added.
Also, Kiriella said new legislation would be enacted to improve the quality of higher education in Sri Lanka.

This guy Kiriella has he any idea about education let alone higher education let alone invite forigners to develop higher education.
As is in Sri Lanka one is not sure as to what medium that they ought to follow. In this regard the Christians of all denominations have a distinct advantage e over their non Cristian fellow travelers in that they are weli versed in the gospel inglish
As for higher education the level of specialization boggles the mind and what is worse is that what was taught at advances level becomes obsolete as it is being taught. The only stuff that remains constant is mathematics.
So what bureaucrats who know nothing of education education must consider seriously is to bypass the umpteen subjects taught at ordinary level and skip ordinary level exams start streaming on application and aptitude, intensify English education. At the end of the third year examine through universal tests and select the 5 percent for higher education. Secondary education should be designed to accommodate vocational training.
University education as is is obsolete for the simple reason about 80 percent who go through university study chronic subjects like his, geography, pali. greek the likes of which does not seve themselves any purpose other than go mad for lack of opportunity which in the final analysis is a waste of time energy and space.
