Fuel access open to all vehicles today under QR quota system

Fuel crisis in Sri Lanka

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CEYPETCO) will allow both odd and even-numbered vehicles to obtain fuel today (April 1).

The decision was made because March 31 and April 1 fall on consecutive odd-numbered dates (31 and 1), which would otherwise limit fuel access under the existing system.

Since February 19, 2026, fuel distribution under the QR code system has been regulated based on the last digit of a vehicle’s license plate.

Vehicles with zero or even-numbered plates are permitted to purchase fuel on even-numbered dates, while vehicles with odd-numbered plates are restricted to odd-numbered dates.

However, due to the overlap of two consecutive odd-numbered days, CEYPETCO has decided to relax the rule for April 1, 2026 allowing all vehicles regardless of plate number to refuel.

Managing Director of CEYPETCO, Mayura Neththikumarage, stated that this concession was granted after considering multiple factors affecting consumers.

The move is expected to ease inconvenience for motorists who would otherwise face delays in accessing fuel under the standard quota system.
