Japan donates seven low-floor buses to strengthen Sri Lanka’s public transport

Seven low-floor buses donated by Japan were officially handed over to Sri Lanka yesterday (September 2) to support the modernization of the country’s public transport service.

The buses were donated jointly by the Government of Japan and residents of Yokohama City under the ongoing development cooperation between Japan and Sri Lanka.

The official handover ceremony was held at the Thalangama Metro Depot, where the buses were handed over to Lanka Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd.

Japan’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata officially handed over the buses to the Sri Lankan Government.

Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake attended the ceremony along with senior officials of the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and officials of Lanka Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd.

The addition of the seven low-floor buses is expected to further support efforts to modernize Sri Lanka’s public transport sector while improving passenger comfort and accessibility.
