Last ditch move to scrap executive presidency thwarted
A last ditch attempt to abolish executive presidency by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was thwarted in the Cabinet today.
This special Cabinet Meeting was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena this evening at the Presidential Secretariat.
Subsequent to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe submitting this proposal, many ministers said that it is unsuitable to bring in such a proposal at a moment when the Presidential Election has already been declared.
They have questioned the Prime Minister on this occasion as to why he did not submit this proposal several months ago.
These Ministers had said further that subsequent to the Presidential Election being held, this proposal can be taken up for consideration.

It’s obvious why PM did not submit this proposal months ago!
This may be the bribe to TNA for votes!
Point to remember; – the executive presidency prevented ELAM from being given previously, which is why TNA want it abolished!!
Our sovereignty would have been under serious threat!
This proposal was aimed at avoiding social chaos that will occur when the EC rejects the nomination of a so-called leading candidate on account of being a dual citizen.
The drama has just begun and will have severe social and economic impact.
Dear REX, you are absolutely correct brother. Why Ranil tabled this at the 11th hour? He is aiming at TNA voter base. To hell with EC and putting their fingers into the internal matters of sovereign SL. If people favour a certain candidate let people have him/her whether the person having a duel or treble nationality for that matter!
RW did not submit this proposal.
In fact, there was no written proposal on the table.
The King summonned an urgent Cabinet Meeting out of the blues to discuss abolition of the Exec Presidency.
The King’s intention is to further divide divisions in the UNP because the SP Group of idiots are promoting SP to be President despite the restrictions of 19A.
The King thinks he is a master behind the scene player.
His actions actually strengthen RW’s likely victory against GR.
It is now apparent that MR is indirectly supporting RW against GR.
I have sent my proposal to the CID as there is no reason it cannot be abolished now
