Sri Lanka extends U.S.$ 40,000 for educational development in Palestine.
Sri Lanka has extended a sum of US$ 40,000/- to strengthen Primary Education Teachers of Palestine. At a simple ceremony held recently at the Representative Office of Sri Lanka to inaugurate the second stage of the project, Mr. Jihad Draidi, Director General for the Projects and Ms. Aisha Bekir, Director of Special Education from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education of Palestine participated at the ceremony.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who had been an ardent supporting of the Palestinian cause, was the President of the Sri Lanka-Palestinian Friendship Association continuously for several years since its inception in the 1970s. Palestinians have a very high esteem for President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and a Highway in Palestine has been named as President Mahinda Rajapaksa Highway in honour of our President.
Dr. T. Jayasinghe, Representative, in his speech at the ceremony has said that Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka is always supporting the Palestinian cause. Accordingly, the Government of Sri Lanka signed MoU with the Ministry of Education & Higher Education of Palestine to grant a financial assistant package of US$ 40,000/- for organizing training workshops to strengthen readiness of Primary Education Teachers in Palestine. He also said that first installment of US$ 20,000/- for the above project was already made and he is satisfied with the activities implemented by utilizing this amount and hope that the goals of the project will be achieved with the 2nd installment of US$ 20,000/- which was made last week. Dr. Jayasinghe also requested the Ministry officials to submit the final progress report in order to forward same to the Sri Lankan authorities, in terms of the MoU.
