Government detached from people’s aspirations cannot bring in economic recovery – Anura
Any government which was detached from people’s true aspirations cannot bring in economic recovery through measures such as imposing taxes, National People Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday.
Speaking at the National Economic Forum organised by the National People’s Power’s Economic Council at the Galadari Hotel, he said no one could expect any government of the world which was instrumental in an economic crisis to take the economy out of that crisis.
He told the packed audience that Sri Lanka could get out of the present economic crisis only through a new government with a mandate to restore the bankrupt economy.
Dissanayake came out with several moves to restore the economy, explaining that as the very first strategy, steps should be taken to seek a moratorium for the existing loans and obtain a new loan through a third party.
He said as the second step, action should be taken to boost the tourism sector which was instrumental in gaining foreign currencies and encourage foreign remittances as another important source to boost up the foreign reserves.
He said people would have to change their lifestyle for a short period of time until the economy comes to normalcy.
Dissanayake said all these measures were possible under a reliable government that all the people could trust.

Nothing new here.
Moratorium, boost tourism, encourage foreign remittances; all being done now.
A radically new idea will be to ‘RECYCLE GOVT EQUITY’ by selling all public assets and investing the money in solar and wind power generation projects to minimise reliance on fossil fuels.
People will certainly have to change their lifestyle until the economy recovers but Citizens of Sri Lanka, BEWARE of the JVP – they appear to be well funded to hold meetings at the Galadari Hotel !! Citizens SHOULD AND WILL NEVER FORGET THE PAST ACTIONS OF THE JVP – when they killed thousands of SINHALA YOUTH. They should NEVER, EVER be TRUSTED with your vote. !!
Of course Dr M,
The JVP/NPP are the people’s most dreaded enemies.
Fundamentally, they stand for ‘UPRISINGS’ to gain power just as they did in the 70’s and 80’s.
We do not have an opposition capable of providing positive leadership.
The SJB is lead by an intellectually capped person who knows nothing but the paths taken by his disastrous father which lead the Nation to oppression, poverty and authoritarianism.
Sri Lanka has no choice but to rely on POHOTTO for political leadership.
