Inspector and Constable sentenced to 28 years rigorous imprisonment for bribery
A Police Inspector and a Police Constable have been sentenced to a 28 year rigorous imprisonment for soliciting a bribe of Rs.10,000 in 2009.
Colombo High Court Judge Shashi Mahendran delivered the sentence today and also ordered the defendants to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 each in addition to the prison sentence.
The Inspector and the Constable were affiliated to the Aralaganwila Police in 2009 where they were found to have solicited a bribe.
A complaint was lodged that the duo demanded a bribe to refrain from taking action against an individual who was arrested with a stock of sambur meat.
They were arrested by officers of the Bribery Commission while accepting the aforementioned amount as a bribe while the commission subsequently filed a case before the Colombo High Court.

While I agree that bribery is a menace in our society that needs to be dealt with I think 28 years for a such a crime is a bit harsh. In that case some our politicians should be sent to prison for 28 life times.
Stanley, I agree with your comment largely speaking. However, please bear in mind this is a one time where these scumbags got caught – and not possibly the other 100’s or 1000’s of time they would have fleeced the nation’s public, often with threats not to report them as they will come back and basically “make you pay for it dearly”….I once was stopped at an obvious ‘traffic ticket trap’ (i.e. where the police would get a vehicle to stop on a busy and narrow road, basically giving the motorists no option but to cross the thick or zig-zag line and go past that vehicle if they want to proceed and thereby technically violating a traffic rule) on the Galle Colombo road and the rotten cop who came over very boldly asked me for Rs.3,000 if he was going to allow me to proceed ‘without any hasssle’ (such as surrendering my license, going to court later, etc.) and he then boldly told me also in Sinhalease “well, you know we are many and we work as a team and I am not saying you will do it, but we always tell anyone who thinks of reporting us that we will catch them even before they reach their destination, or even later, and well, you know how some people end up when we are done with them uh” with a wicked smile on his pock-marked face. I will not tell anymore how this ugly incident ended, but the point is asking for bribes (with direct or hint of threat) is nothing for these sh*t scum – and therefore, whenever I see that one of them has been caught, I am totally enveloped in joy knowing that at least one sh*t scum has been removed!
