Russia strengthens ties with Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka and Russia are to commence direct air links from this year. Accordingly, Sri Lankan airlines and Aeroflot will begin to fly between Moscow and Colombo. Sri Lankan airlines will commence flights to Moscow on September 15th and Aeroflot will begin flights to Colombo from November.
Meanwhile, a team from the Russian Gas company Gazprom, which is considered as the world’s largest gas company, is due in Sri Lanka to discuss oil exploration. Mr. Alexei Miller, the Chairman of Russian oil giant, Gazprom has told President Mahinda Rajapaksa that his company is interested in investing on the oil exploration in the Mannar Basin.
During a meeting with the President at the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg recently, Miller has said that a group of representatives will be sent to Sri Lanka in the near future to further discuss this business venture.(niz)
